GEORGE TOWN: About 5,000 police recruits would complete their training by the middle of this year and would be assigned field duty in several states nationwide, said Bukit Aman director of management Datuk Robiah Abdul Ghani.
She said these assignments would be focused in Johor, Penang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur as they are states with a relatively higher crime rate.
Robiah said the police would have to strategise the deploying of the new officers once their training is complete, as all states were requesting for additional forces.
To help the police in their efforts to keep the streets safe, a total of three million RELA (Ikatan Relawan Rakyat Malaysia) members, civil defence and non-governmental organisation members will spring into action in August, said Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam.
Mahmood said the patrolled areas would expand beyond the crime hotspots that were already identified with the RELA assisted police patrol.
He said RELA would also serve as the bridge between the public and the Home Ministry.
