There was an air of patriotism in the air, as the Sector Focused Career Fair (SFCF) organised by Talent Corporation Berhad (TalentCorp) in collaboration with Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), was launched by minister Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar.
The launch, which included Abdul Wahid driving UNITEN’s Solar Ranger 3, a solar powered vehicle designed to compete in the 2015 World Solar Challenge in Australia, also included a session of patriotic singing by enthusiastic students, organisers, and participants alike, in conjunction with the upcoming Merdeka day celebrations in the country.

Also present at the launch were UNITEN vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Prof. Mashkuri Yaacob, , TalentCorp CEO Johan Mahmood Merican, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad chief investment management officer Nazmi bin Othman.
The SFCF is an initiative by TalentCorp in partnership with participating universities, such as UNITEN, to educate students on the emerging career opportunities in Malaysia, which are available in the national key economic areas.
“Malaysia is a demographically young nation, with a strong talent pool, stable economy, and growing professional opportunities,” said Abdul Wahid , who then touched on how the National Transformation Programmes is opening up these professional opportunities in Malaysia.
He continued to cite the World Bank graduate employability survey, saying that the soft skills were key factors in hiring entry-level graduates, and that the SFCF can help by building better and closer partnership between employers, universities and the government, to ensure the steady stream of industry-ready graduates that our bright economic future requires.
“The SFCF is a prime example of us working closely with employers and universities to produce industry-ready graduates through a three-pronged approach involving greater career awareness, industry exposure, and enhancing skills for employability,” said TalentCorp’s Johan.
Over 45 companies took part in the career fair, which was focusing on the engineering, information technology, and business sectors.
The spirit of Merdeka was celebrated by all shortly after the launching ceremony.
Students, such as 21-year-old software engineering major, Jamunah Naidu, said that “the career fair is helpful for those looking to do internships, as the big companies present here are targeted for our industry.”
Mohd Amsyar, also 21, said that the fair was an eye-opener for students to get to know a few more companies in the industry, which they have not heard of before but are equally impressive.
The SFCF will be held until 5pm on Thursday, Aug 27, at the UNITEN campus in Putrajaya.
