UKM exchanges memorandums at GBS forum

In an effort to strengthen the industry academia partnerships in the Global Business Services (GBS) industry, several memorandums were exchanged between University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and industry leaders as well as educational institutions at the GBS Forum 2016 held recently.

The forum entitled Talent Management and Ascending the Value Chain was organised jointly by Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and UKM. It aims to gather academic researchers and practitioners from a variety of organisations to discuss the emerging issues in the GBS industry today, as well as to introduce the GBS@UKM programme as the pioneer of GBS centre of knowledge generation in Asia.

The event, which took place in the Chancellery building of UKM was attended by UKM pro-vice chancellor of income generation and development Prof Dr Nor Ghani Md Nor, dean of faculty of economics and management Professor Dr. Norman Mohd Salleh, Loughborough University deputy director global sourcing centre Ian Herbert, Shell Private Limited Company global process owner, revenue David Burgess, and MDeC vice-president of GBS cluster Michael Warren.

The GBS@UKM programme is intended to equip future graduates with the knowledge and skills required to increase their employability in the GBS companies. The program will also serve as exposure to the GBS industry in order to provide graduates the confidence to start their early career in the industry.

It also supports collaborative ventures in providing hands-on training opportunities for students such as the setting up of work-based learning lab at UKM, which is a joint effort between UKM and Sigmax-E.

The event also saw an MoU exchange between UKM and Loughborough University, UKM and PIKOM, UKM; and MoA exchange between UKM and SigmaxE; and a research contract exchange between UKM and CIMA as well as a research grant from CIMA.

As one of the key result areas of the nation’s economic transformation programme, Malaysia has raked in RM18bil in foreign investments under the GBS industry in 2015, and has maintained its ranking as the third most preferred location for global business services centre after China and India consecutively since 2004.
