Lifting low-income households out of poverty

KUALA LUMPUR: People in the poor and extreme poor categories are urged to take up the Government’s 1AZAM income-generating programmes for low-income households that are registered with the eKasih system, under the Prime Minister’s Department, to lift themselves out of poverty.

Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the programme has proven to be effective in lifting those who were once considered poor out of the poverty category through its socio-economic activities.

He said about 2,900 people categorised as poor and extreme poor in the Federal Territory were successfully lifted out of their economic predicament last year.

While there are parties that dispute this, Raja Nong Chik said the statistics do in fact show that the people that have been assisted were those that registered with eKasih.

He also said his ministry and other relevant government agencies will look into putting together programmes to raise the living standards of low-income households which is a major GTP initiative.
