‘Malaysia is not like Egypt’

JOHOR BARU: Malaysia is not like Egypt because there are plenty of jobs here and the Government is people-friendly.

“The Egyptian government did not have programmes in place to create job opportunities for its people, leaving many, including the educated, without a source of income,” said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said that in Malaysia there was an abundance of jobs, adding that some vacancies were also being filled by foreign workers.

Dr Mahathir described Malaysia as an exemplary Muslim country.

“However, when we compare the achievements of the Muslims here to non-Muslims, there is still much room for improvement,” he said during a press conference after launching a seminar on unity among the Muslim community yesterday.

Dr Mahathir added that the current mindset of Muslims who yearned to be millionaires overnight needed to be changed.

“The Government has given them (Muslims) approved permits (AP), contracts and licences for free, but they have abused it by selling them for a profit.

“If they had used these opportunities well, there might be some failures but there would also be some who succeed,” he said.
