Oil and gas sector needs 40,000 skilled workers

JOHOR BARU: The country’s oil and gas (O&G) sector will require over 40,000 skilled workers by 2015 due to the booming demand for energy.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the industry, among others, need more welders, technicians, engineers and boiler men in both its downstream and upstream activities.

“We will work with the O&G companies and industry players to ensure the demands are met,” he said.

“This will ensure our O&G sector continues to flourish as it is one of the main contributors to the country’s revenues,” Subramainam said after attending a luncheon for multinational corporations and government-linked companies yesterday.

Dr Subramaniam said the ministry met key players from the sector and many had voiced their difficulty in getting skilled workers.

He added that several agencies under the ministry offered relevant courses in the O&G sector and urged school leavers to enrol for these.

On another sector, Subramaniam said those in the hospitality industry needed to brush up on their proficiency in English.

“I urge employers to enrol staff who are weak in the language in English classes,” he said, adding that these employees usually dealt with the tourists first.
