"How do we deal with Gen-Y?" Human Resources is a constant learning journey

Authors of Bridging the Generation Gap, Linda Gravett and Robin Throckmorton’s research found that 68% of Baby Boomers and 32% of Gen X-ers find that Gen Y-ers have poor work ethics, whereas Gen Y-ers firmly believe that they have a great work ethic that they aren’t given any credit for.

Who’s right? Who’s wrong? And most importantly, what does Human Resources have to do to bridge the different generations? These questions have had HR practitioners puzzled ever since Generation Y first stepped into the working world. What about you and your personal brand? Does your professional image say “Powerful and businesslike,” or does it scream “I don’t know what I’m doing?”

These burning questions need answers, and the HR Lifeline mini-conference is here to answer them. Suitable for anyone in manpower/human resources, it consists of two talks, “Bridging Gen Y, Gen X and the Baby Boomer” and “Your Corporate Image – Then and Now: Is it still the same?”

“This event focuses on 2 major concerns that the majority of the companies are facing,” says Wendy Lee, Professional BrandImage Consultant and President of MABIC (Malaysian Association of Brand & Image Consultants), “One on bridging the gap across generations and another on the business wardrobe – then and now – what is the difference? What has changed?”

The two speakers are Ken Woo, Senior Consultant, AWBT - Australian Wide Business Training Certified Trainer and Lee herself.

These talks will make a difference in the way corporations view Gen Y, which have been called “the most high-maintenance, yet potentially most high-performing generation.” It’s important for HR practitioners to keep abreast of current trends and issues faced by companies nationwide via talks and similar platforms, a view that Serm Teck Choon, head of MyStarJob Network Sdn Bhd, agrees with.

“The HR Lifeline mini-conference is a platform for HR practitioners to connect with each other to learn about the latest topics in the industry. We are very honoured to be part of a platform facilitating knowledge and the exchange of opinions,” says Serm, adding that myStarjob.com’s ongoing efforts to organise this sort of events is part of its integrated recruitment solutions.

myStarjob.com leverages on The Star media group’s integrated media platform to provide cross media recruitment services that include double exposure for job listings in The Star as well as online, Visume (video resumes, pre-screening questions and live chat interviews), as well as a Career Guide that appears in print and online.

The HR Lifeline mini-conference will be held on 24 April, 2013, at the Cybertorium, Menara Star, Phileo Damansara, from 9 am to 1 pm. Interested? Register here!
