Get ahead at the Mind Festival

PETALING JAYA: Those looking to sharpen their analytical, creative and memory skills can head to the 10th Festival of the Mind.

It will be held at the Tunku Abdul Rahman University Campus in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, on June 14 and 15.

Another one will be held in Utar Perak Campus in Kampar, Perak, on June 21 and 22.

The event is organised by the Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) in cooperation with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College.

MMLM chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik said the annual event, with free admission, would feature several top speakers in their respective fields presenting their know-how via 14 public talks and workshops over the two weekends.

“There will also be an exhibition, mind games, Mensa admission test, the Science of Magic including showcasing of the Leonard Personality Inventory (personality test) and mental literacy products,” he told reporters at a press conference here yesterday.

He added that Lenovo and Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphones would be up for grabs for winners of the lucky draws to be held at both events.

Present at the press conference was S. Jeyaraman, founder of Success Edge and a Buzan instructor, who held a demonstration on how one is able to harness creative and memory power through several mental exercises.

“Anything can be remembered because memory is a system,” he said.

Jeyaraman quipped that the festival would also be a good platform for him to practise his memory power before attempting to set a new Malaysian record in the coming weeks for memorising 100 random items.

Another individual with impressive mental skills was West Wong, also known as the “The Human Calculator”, after becoming the first Malaysian to bring home a Memoriad Medal (World Memory and Mental Arithmetic Olympics) in 2012.

At the festival, Wong will show off the power of mental calculation that everyone possesses through “3 Math Tricks You Will Want To Know” including a workshop on “The Simplest Math Shortcuts”.

Other presenters at the festival include Prof Datuk Dr Goh Sing Yau, Datuk Joey Yap, S.K. Tan and Sussanne Lee.
