KUALA LUMPUR: Our youths must be encouraged to do more charity work and social service apart from the emphasis on studies, said the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
She said a constructive collaboration in social service between the higher learning institutions, community and the Government was important to create a loving and caring society.
“Youths are the most valuable asset of a country ... to take over the leadership and development for the future of the nation.
“Their role is huge, with the potential to influence trends or a society’s behaviour,” said Rosmah in her speech at the Wanita Umno Nadi Negara 2013 award presentation yesterday.
“If the youths of a country are weak, the nation would fall behind.
“The benchmark and indication of whether a society is efficient or feeble lies with the young generation,” she said.
Rosmah added that youngsters ought to get involved in various charity works such as helping people during disasters, taking part in programmes involving old folks, the disabled and orphans as well as voluntary work under non-profit organisations such as 1Malaysia For Youth.
“The younger generation who wants to develop the country must have the physical and mental strength to overcome obstacles as well as honourable ethics and personality,” she added.
Rosmah later handed out awards to exceptional university students.
Thirty-five graduates from private and government universities received the awards at the event for their excellence in academic and co-curriculum activities.
Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil also attended the event.
