Cool offices: The urbanite workplace

Unconventional offices seem to be a favourite for those in the technology and innovation industry. In our next search for cool offices, we came across Macrokiosk – a homegrown company that specialises in customisable mobile technology solutions.

Macrokiosk’s headquarter office is located at The Troika situated in the heart of KL, and incorporates five elements - functional, engaging, collaborative, creative and innovative - into its core design.

Founded by three Malaysian brothers, Kenny Goh, Henry Goh, and Goh Chee Seng, we take a look at the interior of their urban-themed office nicknames The Space.

“The reason we’ve assigned a core name, is so we can give everyone who works here more of a sense of belonging,” explains Kenny. “To each their own – one person may think of it as their work space, while another might think of it as their fun space. Personally, I think of it as a spaceship, because of the layout of the office.

The concept of Macrokiosk

Upon entering The Space’s private lobby, the striking detail is the monochromatic colour-scheme that adorns the facade of its interior walls. With the official theme colours of Macrokiosk being grey, black, and white, these neutral colours can be found incorporated in most rooms, and gives an industrial taste to the workplace.

Even the floor plan of The Space is unique. Troika’s twisting geometrical structure that encompasses a central courtyard with a horse-shoe style layout courtesy of

The interior decoration of the place abides to a minimalistic approach, explains Kenny. The idea is to give the impression of being an organisation which is here to stay.

“Instead of going with something that is too funky, we chose a more chic, timeless theme that does not have to be changed throughout the eras.”

Frequently found throughout the office are chic breakout pods to promote productivity and communication. Frequently found throughout the office are chic breakout pods to promote productivity and communication.

Upon proceeding beyond the lobby, the office is laden with nooks and crannies designed for unwinding – such as foosball tables and relaxation corners – as well as breakout corners equipped with tables and chairs of a variety designs, complete with power sockets for accompanying equipment.

The Space Bar. The Space Bar.

One of the highlights of the office is its hipster-looking Space Bar, aptly named after the stroke on the keyboard, which is stocked up full with plenty a variety of snacks – from murukkus to cup noodles and childhood favourites – as well as drinks in the form of coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks.

Meals are also available all-day, prepared by the in-house staff, with weekly tea special menus, and a hearty Monday-morning breakfast special to cure the start-of-the-week blues.

The culture of Macrokiosk

“If you were to sum up our office culture in one word, it would be “trailblazing”,” says Goh.

The nature of the work is such that it constantly is and needs to be ahead of its time, Goh further explains. As a mobile technology enabler that is helping other companies leverage on the technology, the company needs to always be ahead of the curve.

Between stretches of mentally-taxing work, employees are welcomed into The Den to take a short breather, nap, or simply hone some inspiration. Between stretches of mentally-taxing work, employees are welcomed into The Den to take a short breather, nap, or simply hone some inspiration.

“We’re always trying to outdo and challenge ourselves,” Goh adds. “It is something that we feel we have to do not just to stay relevant, but to embrace the true culture of a technology enabler.”

Employees at Macrokiosk are pretty close-knit. Their human capital consist of a mix of different cultures, and occasionally the company holds gatherings and potlucks after hours, for their employees to get acquainted to each other and their respective cultures.

As Goh says, the company is dedicated to becoming a responsible employer, by creating a workspace and environment that gives its employees an opportunity to not only grow in terms of their career, but grow their personal ambitions as well.

Macrokiosk provides certain benefits in line with this mission, such as medical insurance extended to family, as well as study allowance which is granted on a case-by-case basis.

Apart from that, the working hours for employees at Macrokiosk are flexible but structured. Employees have the choice to serve hours between 8am – 5pm, 9am – 6pm, or 10am – 7pm. This allows their staff to accommodate their work tasks while attending to their personal lives as and when needed.
