TalentCorp launches MY ASEAN Internship 2016

Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp) together with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) launched the 2016 intake for the MY ASEAN Internship programme recently.

Officiating the event, Miti minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed called on Malaysian students to take up the over 100 opportunities to intern overseas in another ASEAN country with a top employer.

He addressed over 350 students and representatives of participating Malaysian companies at the MY ASEAN Internship Beyond 2015 event, which also commemorated the successful conclusion of the inaugural 2015 intake of 40 interns.

The line-up of participating employers for 2016 was unveiled by Mustapa at the event. They consist of industry leaders operating in multiple ASEAN countries. They are AIG, AirAsia, Axiata, BDO, CIMB, Deloitte, Digi, Frost & Sullivan, GE, Maybank, Nestlé, PwC Malaysia, Sime Darby, Securities Commission Malaysia, UEM and ZICOlaw.

“By providing work exposure in another ASEAN country, the MY ASEAN Internship helps boost a sense of mutual understanding and ‘citizenship’ of ASEAN among youth. With the success of the 2015 MY ASEAN Internship, we will encourage other ASEAN member countries to embark on similar programmes in their respective countries,” said Mustapa.

The next intake of MY ASEAN Internship commences in January 2016 and will be done in two sessions: January to June, and July to December. Under the programme, high-achieving Malaysian students from public and private institutions of higher learning, both at home and abroad, will be given an opportunity to intern with leading employers at various ASEAN locations.

With a minimum internship duration of eight weeks, the interns will have the opportunity to develop new skill sets required by leading industries while experiencing the work culture in different parts of ASEAN. Students from other ASEAN countries are also able to do their internship in Malaysia.

“Malaysia increasingly needs talent with a regional, if not global mindset to support the internationalisation of Malaysian companies like Maybank. The MY ASEAN Internship programme is a great avenue to identify and nurture today’s talent into regional business leaders of tomorrow,” said Maybank group chief human capital officer Nora Abd Manaf.

She added that the programme’s unique value lay in its aim of offering high-performing youth a meaningful internship experience with an ASEAN context, while at the same time enabling companies to leverage on a pool of future regional captains.

To further facilitate top foreign talent to intern in Malaysia, the Ministry of Home Affairs will introduce a Social Visit Pass from Nov 9 onwards to cater to short-term International Mobility Programmes for students. This pass will allow international students to do internships, engage in student exchange or industrial training programmes in Malaysia for a period of up to three months.

TalentCorp CEO Johan Mahmood Merican said, “The MY ASEAN Internship programme serves to showcase the exciting career opportunities available, particularly with Malaysian companies having regional presence and multinationals with regional headquarters in Malaysia. We look forward to more leading employers participating next year.”
